Acharya Nagarjuna University, named after the great Buddhist philosopher Acharya Nagarjuna, was established in 1976 and is located between Vijayawada and Guntur on Kolkata - Chennai National Highway (NH 16). The university was inaugurated on 11th September, 1976 by the former President of India, Sri Fakruddin Ali Ahmed and celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2001. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded “A”-grade to Acharya Nagarjuna University.

The University was originally started as a Post Graduate Centre of Andhra University in 1967 and later grown into a full-fledged Centre of higher learning in 1976, as the Nagarjuna University, fulfilling the aspirations of the people of the area. Since then, it has achieved tremendous progress through quantitative expansion and qualitative improvements on various academic fronts. This was made possible by the relentless efforts of successive Vice-Chancellors starting from Prof. V. Balaiah to the present dynamic Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raja Sekhar Patteti and a large pool of dedicated faculty, an efficient team of supporting staff and high-quality student input. It has a spacious campus, spread over 293 acres.

The University and its affiliated colleges offer a wide variety of programmes including Engineering, Education, Law, Pharmacy, Science, Commerce, Management and Arts. The University runs different academic departments and advanced research centres.

Higher Education in recent years, has undergone significant paradigm shift including the shift from ‘teacher-centered’ to a ‘learner-centered’ learning and the replacement of the traditional method of ‘learning over a specified period of time’ by the concept of informal and continuous ‘lifelong learning’.
